Lively literary discussions in the classroom, an every-day challenge

In this one-day workshop we will deal with monitoring and handling successful discussions in class, based on literary texts. Our main focus will be methodological and pedagogical approaches for raising the quality of our students' talking skills.

One of the main objectives of using literature in the language classroom is to enable the learners to engage with the texts and develop a personal yet acceptable interpretation of the literary work. On top of that we all want to motivate the learners and to encourage communication in the classroom rather than lecture about the works. In this workshop we will see how it is possible to create lessons about literature within a Communicative Language Teaching framework, lessons which actively engage the learners in exploring the works. Participants will reflect on their teaching and explore ways of pedagogical development. We will use a variety of texts and text genres, from classics of the literary canon to 21st century cartoons, and get hands-on experience in planning lessons.

Amos Paran is the course leader of the MA TESOL at the Institute of Education, Univ. of London. From secondary school teacher in Israel he moved into teacher training and materials writing. He has given workshops on literature in many countries and was the coordinator of the IATEFL Literature, Media and Cultural Studies Special Interest Group between 1996 and 2008, and has recently edited a volume of case studies entitled "Literature and Language Teaching and Learning", TESOL.
