Twenty years ago we had no coherent description of oral British English and so we followed the coursebooks of the time and taught our students to speak like books. Since then Carter and McCarthy have got together the CANCODE corpus of oral language and have discovered just how educated native speakers of UK English actually do speak. These discoveries are now in the public domain between the covers of the Cambridge Grammar of English, Carter and McCarthy 2006.

This workshop has two aims:
1. to make you aware of the newly discovered rule systems that govern oral English.
2. to offer you exercises to use with your students to bring these rules to life.
3. to realize together how we teachers face a situation we would maybe like to ignore while we know this oral area of English from songs, emails and texting. Has teaching become a balancing act?

One clear example of the above mentioned discoveries: Oral UK English is basically a
subject verb object language. It can also, however, be a topic comment language, eg: "That hotel down by the lake, looking across to Lucerne, nice place, isn't it?

Mario Rinvolucri is an ELT expert and teacher trainer with an international reputation. He is known for his numerous resource books. His workshop at the IATEFL 2009 on the subject of "How to teach ORAL ENGLISH was very entertaining, empowering as well as instructive.
