The art of lesson planning – raising and sustaining interest from start to finish (and beyond) (WARTELISTE)

Objectif

The genre of Young Adult Fiction (YA) is immensely popular with teenagers, but what is it exactly that defines a book as YA? With markets continously more and more swamped with YA novels, how can we keep uptodate on the latest YA publications? What criteria do we need to observe when choosing a YA novel for our class? And onwe we have found a suitable novel, hat can we actually do with it?

Contenu du cours

On the first day of this two-part workshop, participants will receive input on how to design lessons fulfilling a range of aims: introducing a novel and wrapping it up, dealing with the plot, working on vocabulary and grammar, as well as discussing aspects of culture. In connection to this Prof. Ana Sobral from the English Seminar will present the topic of rap music and illustrate ways of integrating songs into the teaching of YA.

It is hoped that by the end of Part 1 participants will feel eager to set up their own YA lessons in preparation for Part 2. Detailed discussions of the design and implementation of these lessons is a major focus in Part 2, with online feedback provided by participants and instructors in between workshops.

Part 1:

  • Participants will be introduced to the genre of Young Adult Fiction (YA).
  • Participants will get an idea of when, how and how often YA can realistically be taught.
  • Participants will be shown how YA novels can be divided into a series of age-appropriate and motivating lessons and how they can be combined with other aspects of teaching English.
  • In the afternoon, Prof. Ana Sobral from the English Seminar will present an input on (rap) music in YA.
  • In preparation for Part 2 of this course, participants are invited to set up their own lessons based on a YA novel of their choice (cf reading list).
Part 2:
  • There will be ample time to report back on the lessons participants have planned and tried out in the meantime.
  • A detailed discussion of the planning and implementation of the lessons set up by participants should help participants to either complete their outline of lessons or get inspiration for teaching other YA novels.
  • A list of YA novels will be presented and complemented by reviews written by the instructor’s 9th graders.
